Standard American Roulette Rules

Standard American Roulette Rules

  • Wheel and Table Layout: American roulette features a wheel with 38 numbered pockets (1-36, 0, and 00) arranged in a non-sequential order. The numbers are alternately colored red and black, except for the 0 and 00 pockets, which are green. The betting table layout corresponds to the numbers on the wheel, with various betting options available to players.

  • Betting: Players can place bets on individual numbers, groups of numbers, colors (red or black), odd or even numbers, or specific ranges of numbers. There are two main categories of bets:

    • Inside bets

    • Outside bets.

  • Inside Bets: These are bets placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers within the grid of the betting table. Examples include straight bets (on a single number), split bets (on two adjacent numbers), street bets (on three numbers in a row), corner bets (on four adjacent numbers), and six-line bets (on six numbers in two adjacent rows).

  • Outside Bets: These are bets placed on larger groups of numbers or characteristics of the numbers, located outside the main grid of the betting table. Examples include bets on red or black, odd or even, high or low (1-18 or 19-36), dozen bets (on groups of 12 numbers), and column bets (on one of the three vertical columns of numbers).

  • Minimum and Maximum Bets: Each roulette table has minimum and maximum bet limits for each round. Players must place bets within these limits.

  • Spinning the Wheel and Ball: After players have placed their bets, the dealer spins the roulette wheel in one direction and releases a small ball into the spinning wheel in the opposite direction.

  • Outcome Determination: As the wheel slows down, the ball loses momentum and eventually comes to rest in one of the numbered pockets on the wheel.

  • Winning and Losing Bets: Players win or lose based on whether their bets match the outcome of the spin. Winning bets are paid out according to predetermined payout rates, which vary depending on the type of bet placed.

  • House Edge: The presence of the 0 and 00 pockets gives the house an edge in American roulette. The presence of the double zero (00) increases the house edge compared to European roulette, where there is only a single zero (0).
